Technical Glossary
Annealed
Bar or wire that has been softened using a heating process to increase the ductability or remove internal stress of wire or bar. Indwisco does not anneal material in-house but can source pricing if needed.
Clean & Bright / Brite Basic / Mild Steel
All colloquial terms used to describe Low Carbon C1008/C1010 steel wire or bar.
Cold Drawn / Cold Finished
Bar or wire produced by the process of pulling or rolling (without preheating) Hot Rolled Rod from the steel mill to a smaller diameter. Prior to this cold reduction in diameter, the hot rolled rod must be descaled. The iron oxide scale on the hot rolled rod may be removed either chemically or mechanically. All Indwisco wire and bar is mechanically descaled and cold drawn.
Cold Heading Quality (CHQ)
The best billets, chosen by steel mills, that have had their surface conditioned to produce a Hot Rolled Rod with fewer impurities. The wire and bar produced from this superior class of steel will result in higher yields when the finished product requires heavy deformation, such as cold heading manufacturing.
Hot Rolled Rod
Billets cast from a Steel Heat are preheated in an oven, rolled to a standard diameter and coiled in 2,000 to 6,000 lb. bundles. The cooling of the hot rolled steel is precisely controlled to produce an oxide scale on the surface that protects the underlying rod from rusting until it is processed. The scale can be removed chemically or mechanically. Indwisco uses mechanically descalable rod which is more environmentally friendly than the more common chemically descaled rod. By decaling, cleaning, drawing to size and, when called for, cutting to length in a continuous process, we are able to maximize efficiency and minimize cost.
In-line Wire Drawing
A process Indwisco employs to take raw Hot Rolled Rod coils, mechanically de-scale, cold draw down to diameter and cut to length all in one process. Perfecting this process has allowed Indwisco to become the leader in quick, quality and consistent cut to length steel bars in Low Carbon and Stainless.
Mechanical De-Scaling
The process of bending Hot Rolled Rod over rollers in the vertical and then the horizontal plane, causing the hard mill surface scale to crack and fall off. The descaled rod is then run through several wire brushes to remove any remaining scale producing a clean, contaminant-free steel surface for the drawing operation.
Pre-Galvanized Wire
Zinc coated steel wire that has been "hot dipped," creating a bright and shiny finish for wire in moisture-sensitive applications.
Steel 'Heat'
A combination of scrap steel and virgin material, melted in a furnace containing hundreds of tons. The chemical composition is tested, carefully formulated to meet international standards and, in some cases, tailored to specific needs and applications. The chemical make-up of the furnace contents is certified to the chemical standards that the 'heat' meets and poured into billets. After the billets solidify they are graded and stored for later hot rolling.
